Raspberry Root Barrier is designed to contain and stop plants from migrating where they don't belong. Manufactured of HDPE, this durable plastic root barrier is a permanent solution to contain raspberry roots.  

Raspberry plants will spread if left uncontrolled. Our 60 mil raspberry barrier is the ideal material to keep the roots contained for years. This barrier will last for decades and is UV stabilized with a military grade carbon additive to reduce breakdown in the sun.


The typical application of this barrier:

  1. Dig a trench 16-17 inches deep around the plants.
  2. Measure, cut, and place the barrier in the trench so that 1-2 inches of the barrier are above grade. This prevents the roots from trying to sneak over.
  3. Encircle the plastic so its standing next to itself, recommended 4 feet of overlap. 
  4. Use double sided barrier tape in vertical and horizontal crosshatch strips to join the overlapping barrier onto itself.
  5. Backfill the trench with the remaining dirt

How deep do raspberry roots grow?

Many gardeners have experienced raspberry plants spreading out of their patch and encroaching on other areas of the garden. This is quite frustrating and could easily be addressed if we address how deep the roots of raspberry plants grow. If we can block the roots from spreading then we can keep our plants in order.

Raspberry roots grow on average 10-12 inches in depth and can be easily controlled using a plastic 18-inch depth root barrier being careful to encircle all the plants in the patch.

Technical: A raspberry root barrier is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheet—here at 60 mil (≈1/16" or 1.5 mm)—installed vertically in a trench to block rhizomes and roots from spreading.

In plain English: It’s a tough plastic wall underground that keeps raspberry plants from sneaking into lawns, beds, or property lines.

How to Install Raspberry Root Barrier (Step-by-Step)

  1. Plan the layout: Decide whether you’re encircling a patch or creating a straight barrier along one side.
  2. Trench: Dig 16–17 inches deep around the plants (or along the boundary). Keep walls as vertical as possible.
  3. Position the barrier: Place the 60-mil HDPE so 1–2 inches remain above grade. This above-grade lip stops roots from “bridging” over.
  4. Overlap: At the ends, overlap at least 4 feet (wrap the barrier so it stands next to itself). This prevents gaps where roots could slip through.
  5. Join the overlap: Use double-sided barrier tape applied in vertical and horizontal crosshatch strips to bond the overlapping sections.
  6. Backfill: Refill the trench, tamping soil in lifts to eliminate voids and keep the barrier upright.
  7. Final check: Ensure the top edge is level and 1–2" above grade along the entire run.

  • In heavy clay or rocky soils, widen the trench slightly for easier placement.
