Why High-Density Polyethylene Is Used For So Many Applications

High-density polyethylene, often referred to as HDPE, is a petroleum thermoplastic chosen for many applications. This is a popular synthetic resin due to its linear structure and branches for maximum strength or density ratio. Its molecular makeup is used to resist moisture and can save on costs.

HDPE first came on the scene in the 30s and used for high-frequency radar cables during World War II and shortly thereafter, it was introduced to the commercial market. The grades of this plastic range from very flexible to rigid. The lower density grades are less rigid and the high-density grades are stiffer and offer high crystallinity. The degree of crystallinity affects its stability, transparency, and density.

    HDPE - Popular Uses

    Plastic Bottles
Most people discovered plastic bottles when water bottles were introduced. HDPE can be easily molded for many food and beverage containers and will not leach into the contents. HDPE is also recyclable making it a great choice for disposable products.

    Chemical Containers
HDPE is chemical resistant making it perfect for containers and bottles including laundry, shampoos and conditions, household cleaning products, antifreeze, motor oil, and recycling bins. Also, When the bottles have been colored, it adds to its strength.

    Pipes

HDPE pipe grade sheet has a higher molecular weight in comparison to standard HDPE. The extra strength with its UV resistance makes it perfect for piping and outdoor uses. The pipe grade sheet can withstand -220 to 180° F. As it can withstand chemicals it's used in the industrial sector for various uses.

    Some HDPE Advantages Include:

    • Affordable
    • High-Quality
    • Withstands Under Harsh Temperatures
    • Non-Leaching
    • UV Resistant
    • Resistant to Most Chemicals
    • Stiff Material
    • Excellent Durability
    • Very Versatile
