Standard-grade woven geotextile fabric is a high-strength ground stabilization layer for driveways, roads, and construction pads. It separates subgrade soil from aggregate and spreads load — keeping base rock from sinking into soft ground while letting water pass through.
What woven stabilization fabric does
Separates soil & stone
Placed between subgrade and aggregate, it stops base rock from punching down into soft soil — so your gravel stays where you put it instead of disappearing into the mud.
Spreads the load
High tensile strength distributes wheel and axle loads across a wider area, reducing rutting and extending the life of driveways, haul roads, and construction pads.
Lets water through
The woven weave is permeable — water drains through while soil particles stay separated, keeping the base course stable in wet and freeze-thaw conditions.
Woven vs. nonwoven geotextile
Both are geotextiles, but they solve different problems. Picking the wrong one is the most common — and most expensive — mistake on a stabilization job.
- Woven geotextile — high strength, low elongation. Built for stabilization and separation: driveways, roadbase, subgrade under aggregate, and heavy-load pads. This is that product.
- Nonwoven geotextile — high flow, high elongation. Built for drainage and filtration: French drains, edge drains, and behind retaining walls.
Rule of thumb: if the job is about load support and keeping stone out of dirt, reach for woven. If it's about moving water, reach for nonwoven.

Does woven geotextile fabric let water through?
Yes. The woven structure is permeable, so water passes through while the fabric holds soil and aggregate apart. It drains more slowly than nonwoven fabric, which is why woven is chosen for load support rather than primary drainage.
Is woven geotextile the same as landscape fabric?
No. Lightweight landscape fabric is designed for weed control in garden beds. Woven stabilization geotextile is a structural, high-tensile material engineered to carry load and separate soil layers under gravel, roads, and pads — a much stronger, heavier product.
What fabric goes under a gravel driveway?
For most driveways, a standard-grade woven geotextile is the right choice. It's laid over the prepared subgrade before the base stone so the gravel doesn't sink or pump into soft soil. For very weak or wet subgrade, step up to intermediate grade.
How do I choose the right roll size?
Match roll width to your work area to minimize seams, then pick a length that covers your square footage with some overlap. The reference table above lists coverage for each stocked size; overlap adjoining runs by 12–24 inches on stable ground and more on soft soil.
