What An ADA Detectable Warning Surface Is

ADA detectable warning surface is a universal term used with ADA tiles and ADA solutions for truncated domes tactile warning systems designed to offer physical signals for visually impaired people. These detectable warning pavers are critical at intersections near hazardous roads and pedestrian walkways. Those who are visually impaired will be alerted ahead of time when approaching potentially dangerous situations.  ADA tiles must be easily seen, felt underfoot, and detected with guidance canes.

Truncated domes are placed in an inline pattern and have a well-known shape that is very easy to recognize by those who have a visual impairment. They serve every behavior of an ADA solution and are considered the industry standard. The surface must have a visual effect that is created by the color of the ADA tile being in total contrast with the surrounding concrete surfaces.  Every Armor-Tile® ADA tile and ADA solution will offer long-term, high-performance guidance for the visually impaired and will withstand heavy foot traffic.

Cross Walk with ADA Truncated Domes

Tactile Warning Tiles at Crosswalk

They take pride in being at the top for ADA compliance. They have designed every one of their ADA tiles with federal and state ADA standards in mind. They are the best and should be the first option for ADA solutions. To meet these standards, they combined their proven polymer processing and material technologies with intelligent design features to create the most cost-effective and long-lasting detectable warning tiles on the market.

Armor-Tile® truncated domes are detectable guidance tiles that have been meticulously tested to guarantee their quality including the AAHSTO HS20-44 along with various ASTM D tests and ASTM concrete tests. The truncated domes are individually tested against wear and tear. They have set the standards for durability and detectability in tactile warning systems.

Their Armor-Tile® ADA tiles are shipped with installation instructions. After installation, the detectable warning pavers will create a smooth, code-compliant transition from tactile warning surfaces to the surrounding substrate. Compliant transitions are mandatory for those with visual impairments and it's imperative for them to be able to feel truncated domes and guiding strips comfortably through their shoes. They have incorporated sound reflection technology into each one of their tactile warning systems so people with guidance canes can easily navigate the entire area without help. Armor-Tile® ADA tiles are found in private and public places around the world including ADA curb ramps, transit platforms, pedestrian crossings, parking areas, and vehicular passageways.

What Is An ADA Detectable Warning Surface?

There were several professions involved in constructing ADA-compliant tactile warning surfaces. Therefore, there are different terms used to describe truncated domes and wayfinding surfaces. Here are a few examples that many people use when referring to Armor-Tile® tactile warning products:

ADA Detectable warning strips
ADA Detectable warning mats, detectable warning tile
Tactile walking surface indicators (TWSI)

The Armor-Tile® design team worked diligently to offer truncated domes and tactile warning systems that can be used in any public or private area for the visually impaired community with ADA solutions wherever their lives carry them.

Armor-Tile® Goes Beyond ADA Regulations

The Armor-Tile® design team created the truncated dome tiles to be compliant with and even go beyond all ADA regulations. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990 by recognizing the rights of people, regardless of their ability to participate in all facets of daily public life. It's considered a comprehensive piece of civil right legislation which is also known as an “Equal Opportunity” law for people with disabilities and fights against discrimination against disabled people in the US, especially when it comes to employment, transportation, and all accessible public areas.

During the 20th century, there was very little “Equal Opportunity” legislation, infrastructure, and development codes so many Americans did not have equal access to many places. Thanks to the ADA regulations, we now have changes in a number of ways including the addition of ADA tiles and ADA solutions to many public and private places.

One of the ADA standards called for the installation of truncated domes and wayfinding tiles in pedestrian places open to the public including transit platforms, walkways, transitional spaces, vehicular parking garages, ADA curb ramps, and many other places. To be considered an ABA-compliant infrastructure, every detectable warning strip must adhere to stringent size and spacing specifications. They must be visually contrasting with adjacent walkways or platforms and meet many measurement-specific standards.

For more information about ADA regulations, visit our site. You can read up on comprehensive, Truncated Domes ADA Requirements on most official government websites.
