The 20-gauge Self Furring Metal Lath is ideal for one-coat stucco applications, providing excellent coverage with dimensions of 150' long and 37" wide (51.4 sq yds). Featuring furring points every 4 inches, it ensures consistent and reliable installation. The soft-weave process keeps the lath flat and pliable, preventing common issues such as rust, broken wires, wavy edges, warps, and bubbles. The increased width guarantees complete coverage from the weep screed to the window sill.

The 17-gauge Self Furring Metal Lath is perfect for three-coat stucco applications, offering extensive coverage and durability with dimensions of 150' long and 36" wide (50 sq yds). It includes eight rows of 'Channel Furr' across the width, providing a standard 3/8" furr. The soft-weave process keeps the lath flat and pliable, avoiding common problems like rust, broken wires, wavy edges, warps, and bubbles.

Both products meet industry standards as specified in ICC Report No. ESR-2055. Manufactured with proprietary machinery and a commitment to quality, this lath is straight and flat-lying, reducing labor costs and minimizing claims and returns, ensuring superior performance and aesthetics.

Self-Furring Metal Lath: An Overview

Successful stucco and stone veneer applications require more than just quality mortar—they require a superior foundation. Self-Furring Metal Lath is engineered to provide the essential mechanical bond needed for long-term structural integrity.

Why Furring is Essential for Plaster Bonding

In traditional masonry, if the lath sits flush against a solid substrate like wood or masonry, the plaster cannot wrap around the wire. This results in poor adhesion. Self-furring lath is manufactured with dimples or "V-grooves" that create a 1/4-inch offset.

This offset allows the scratch coat to fully encapsulate the mesh, creating a reinforced concrete slab that resists moisture penetration and delamination. By choosing a self-furring galvanized lath, contractors ensure that the building envelope meets international building codes while significantly reducing on-site labor time.

Comparison: 17-Gauge vs. 20-Gauge Lath

The choice of gauge depends on the specific stucco system being applied. 17-Gauge Self-Furring Lath is the standard for traditional three-coat stucco. Its heavy-duty construction provides the rigidity necessary to support the weight of multiple layers of cement plaster without sagging.

For one-coat systems, 20-Gauge Metal Lath is often preferred. It is lighter and easier to work with around corners, yet it still provides the galvanized protection necessary to prevent rust and degradation over time. Both options feature a "soft-weave" design that allows the product to lay flat when unrolled, eliminating the dangerous "spring-back" of cheaper alternatives.

Case Study: Improving Commercial Stucco Efficiency

Challenge: A multi-unit commercial project faced delays due to the time required to manually install furring strips over a masonry substrate.

Solution: The contractor switched to a 37" wide, 20-gauge self-furring lath roll. The dimpled furring points allowed the team to fasten the lath directly to the substrate with power-actuated fasteners, maintaining a consistent 3/8-inch scratch coat depth.

Outcome: By eliminating manual furring, the team increased productivity by 22%. The resulting finish was free of "telegraphing" (where lath lines show through the finish) and met all ASTM C1063 structural requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard rolls come in 36" or 37" widths and are typically 150 feet long, covering roughly 50 to 51.4 square yards per roll.

While no stucco is 100% crack-proof, self-furring lath significantly reduces the risk by ensuring the wire is embedded in the center of the plaster, providing superior reinforcement against thermal expansion.

Yes, our self-furring lath is G-60 galvanized, which provides a high level of corrosion resistance against moisture and salt air common in coastal regions.
