The Drain Channel Kit provides a ready-to-install drainage system built for commercial and residential strength. Neutral channel and ductile iron grates combine for lasting water management.

  • Complete Kit – Neutral channel, iron grates with hardware, end outlet, end cap, grate locks.
  • Grate Durability – Ductile iron construction handles wear and corrosion.
  • Channel Size – 6″ wide × 4 ft long, 4.3″ invert, 6.1″ total depth.
  • Neutral Base – Flat invert for minimal slope conditions.
  • H-20 Rating – Suitable for vehicular applications including driveways and patios.

Steel Grate Option: Galvanized steel grates are also available as an accessory to this kit. Adding a steel grate will reduce the load rating to Class C. Two grates are required per channel.

Custom Trench / Channel Drain System & Accessories (Free Shipping)

The above kit is one product in the Dura Slope® trench drain series. If you are looking to put togehter a sloped drain or custom system please see the components below. Please note, accessories (grates, clips, caps, etc.) must be purchased with a channel /  trench drain system including channels and cannot ship alone.

Drain Channel Kit: A Practical Installation & Buying Guide

The Drain Channel Kit combines the essential components for a clean, concrete-embedded drainage run that performs under traffic and weather. This guide explains how the system works, why a neutral invert (flat-base) profile is useful, step-by-step installation, grate options, and a real-world case study—plus FAQs.

What Is the Drain Channel Kit?

It’s a pre-bundled trench (channel) drain system made for embedment in concrete. Each kit includes a neutral (flat) invert channel, two ductile iron grates with fasteners, an end outlet, an end cap, and grate locks. In plain English: you get the water-carrying body, durable metal grates that sit flush to the slab, and the end pieces—so takeoffs are simple and field work stays on schedule.

Why crews prefer kits

  • All core parts arrive together—fewer SKUs and fewer missing items.
  • Factory-matched components for dependable fit and proven load performance.
  • Streamlined staging, fewer seams, and predictable results.

Key Specifications & Performance

Spec Value Plain-English Benefit
Channel Width × Length 6″ × 4 ft per section Compact footprint for plazas, sidewalks, and aprons; sections link for longer runs.
Invert Depth / Total Depth 4.3″ invert / 6.1″ total Solid hydraulic capacity without deep excavation.
Invert Type Neutral (flat base) Ideal when the slab provides fall or where thresholds must be precise.
Standard Grates Ductile iron (locking) High strength and wear resistance for concrete slabs and traffic zones.
Traffic Rating H-20 (with proper installation) Suitable for passenger vehicles and light trucks in drive lanes and lots.
Optional Grates Galvanized steel (accessory) Two per channel; reduces rating to Class C for lighter-duty areas.

When a Neutral-Invert Channel Is the Right Choice

A neutral invert means the channel’s interior base is flat—no built-in slope. Choose it when your concrete slab establishes the grade or when you need tight elevation control at transitions (door thresholds, ADA routes, storefront entrances, plaza edges). In short: the slab dictates drainage; the channel follows.

Ideal applications

  • Shopping centers, campuses, and municipal walkways
  • Drive lanes, aprons, and parking lots
  • Retrofits with limited excavation depth
  • Door/gate openings where grate height must be exact

Concrete-Embed Installation: Step-by-Step

  1. Layout & Elevations: Snap lines; set finished grate height. Verify the slab design provides fall toward the outlet.
  2. Excavate & Bed: Allow space for the channel plus concrete encasement. Compact base and place stable bedding.
  3. Form & Support: Set forms. Dry-fit channels, end cap, and end outlet. Use rebar legs/ties or channel feet (if provided) to hold elevation.
  4. Join Sections: Connect channels per instructions. Use grate locks or temporary bracing to prevent bulging during the pour.
  5. Verify Alignment: Check straightness, joint seating, and top-of-grate height vs. slab edges.
  6. Place Concrete: Pour evenly on both sides to avoid floating. Consolidate gently to remove voids without shifting channels.
  7. Finish & Cure: Finish flush to the grate rails. Allow full cure per mix design before traffic.
  8. Install Grates: After cure, set ductile iron grates and fasteners; torque to recommendations.

Pro tips (avoid callbacks)

  • Brace/lock channels before the pour to keep runs straight.
  • Eliminate voids at sidewalls—voids undermine support and rating.
  • Confirm outlet height and piping ahead of pour day.

Case Study: Retail Plaza Walkway Drainage Upgrade

Site: Open-air shopping center with periodic ponding along storefront walks.
Problem: Stormwater collected near entrances, creating slick areas and maintenance calls after heavy rain.
Solution: A 130-ft run of the Drain Channel Kit was installed along the curb line. A narrow slab band was re-poured with ~1% fall toward the end outlet; ductile iron grates were chosen for durability and secure footing.

Why this kit: The all-in-one package simplified purchasing and staging; the neutral invert made matching existing storefront elevations straightforward. The H-20 rating provided confidence for occasional service-vehicle crossings.

  • Install time: Two days (demo, trenching, set, pour) plus post-cure grate install.
  • Outcome: Improved drainage, cleaner edges, and fewer slip complaints.
  • Maintenance: Seasonal grate lift/flush; debris buildup remained minimal.

Choosing Ductile Iron vs. Galvanized Steel Grates

Ductile iron grates provide long-term strength and wear resistance in concrete, supporting the kit’s H-20 traffic rating when installed correctly. For lighter-duty or decorative areas, galvanized steel grates are an option; note this reduces the load class to C and requires two grates per channel.

Common Installation Mistakes

  • Insufficient support during the pour—leads to bowing or misalignment.
  • Voids beside the channel—reduce support and lower load rating.
  • Incorrect grate elevation relative to slab—creates trip edges or bypass flow.
  • Skipping locks/fasteners—allows rattle or displacement under traffic.

Maintenance & Service Life

Establish a routine inspection/cleanout cadence—quarterly for most commercial sites, seasonally for residential. Lift grates, remove debris, and flush toward the outlet. With proper embedment and care, the channel and ductile iron grates deliver a long, low-maintenance service life.

FAQ: Drain Channel Kits

Does a neutral invert drain still need slope?
Yes. The concrete slab must provide the fall; the channel follows that grade toward the outlet.
Is H-20 suitable for parking areas and access roads?
H-20 covers typical passenger and light truck loads when properly embedded in concrete. For heavier axle loads, confirm requirements with your engineer.
Can I switch to galvanized steel grates later?
Yes, but the load class drops to Class C. Ensure the application’s traffic matches that lighter-duty rating.
How many steel grates are required per channel section?
Two galvanized steel grates per channel section are required when selecting the optional steel grate accessory.
