Silt Fabric: A Practical Guide to Sediment Control on Job Sites

How to choose, install, and maintain silt fabric to protect streams, lakes, and storm sewers—plus a real-world case study.

What Is Silt Fabric?

Technical: Silt fabric is a sediment-control textile made from woven polypropylene yarns, installed vertically with stakes to intercept sheet flow and trap suspended soil particles before they leave the site.

Plain English: It’s a tough, woven fabric wall that keeps muddy water from carrying dirt into nearby creeks and storm drains.

Why Our Silt Fabric

  • Effective sediment blocking: Durable woven polypropylene helps protect sensitive waterways and storm sewers.
  • Ready to install: Ships with eleven 36" oak stakes for reliable support.
  • Compliance-friendly: Aligns with common BMPs for construction stormwater control.
  • Versatile: Ideal for perimeters, stockpiles, and along property lines downslope of disturbed areas.

Best-Use Locations for Silt Fabric

  • Downslope perimeter of graded areas and soil stockpiles
  • Edges adjacent to wetlands, lakes, or storm inlets
  • Along contours where sheet flow naturally travels
  • Short-term controls during clearing, trenching, and utility work

How to Install Silt Fabric (Step-by-Step)

  1. Plan the line: Lay out the fence along the contour—avoid running straight up and down slopes to prevent water from concentrating.
  2. Trench the toe: Dig a trench about 6" deep x 6" wide on the upslope side where the fabric will sit.
  3. Set the fabric: Place the lower 6" of fabric into the trench. Keep the fabric taut between stakes.
  4. Stake it: Drive the included 36" oak stakes on the downslope side at 6–8 ft spacing (tighten to 4–6 ft at low points or steeper sections).
  5. Backfill & compact: Backfill the trench and compact soil firmly against the fabric to prevent undermining.
  6. Overlap joints: Overlap fabric at least 12" and wrap around a shared stake; secure so there are no gaps.
  7. Terminate with J-hooks: At ends and long runs, curve the fence upslope to contain flow and sediment.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t use silt fabric across channels with concentrated flow—use check dams or inlet protection there.
  • Keep fabric drum-tight; sagging sections fail early.
  • Stage extra stakes at low points where water pressure increases.

Maintenance & Removal

  • Inspect after storms: Repair tears, re-drive loose stakes, and re-compact scoured toes.
  • Manage sediment: When sediment builds to ~⅓ fabric height, shovel it back onto the site and stabilize.
  • Remove at stabilization: After vegetation is established or hard surfaces are in, remove the fabric and dispose per local rules.

Selection Cheat Sheet

  • Fabric: Woven polypropylene for strength and reliable sediment capture.
  • Stake kit: Includes eleven 36" oak stakes for robust installations.
  • Stake spacing: 6–8 ft typical; tighten spacing on steep slopes or soft soils.
  • Height: Commonly 24–36"; choose taller profiles for heavier loads.
  • Companion BMPs: Inlet protection, rock check dams, and stabilized entrances to reduce tracking and bypass.

Material: Woven polypropylene yarns

Includes: Eleven 36" oak stakes

Primary Use: Prevent sediment from entering streams and storm sewers

Ships: Ready for jobsite deployment

Case Study: Small Subdivision Passes Stormwater Inspection

Project: 12-lot residential subdivision with perimeter grading adjacent to two curb inlets.

Challenge: Early summer storms caused turbid runoff and daily inlet cleanouts. Inspector warned of corrections and potential fines.

Solution: Crew installed our woven polypropylene silt fabric along the downslope perimeter, tightened stake spacing to 4–6 ft at low points using the included 36" oak stakes, trenched a 6" toe, overlapped joints 12" at shared stakes, and added inlet protection as a companion BMP.

Results (first 30 days):

  • Eliminated visible off-site sediment discharge during three 1"–1.25" storm events.
  • Reduced inlet cleanouts from daily to once per storm.
  • Passed municipal inspection with zero corrective actions, avoiding rework and delays.

Common Mistakes & Easy Fixes

  • No trench: Water undercuts the fabric. Fix: Always bury and compact a 6" toe upslope.
  • Too-wide stake spacing: Long spans sag and fail. Fix: Tighten to 4–6 ft at low points.
  • Poor overlaps: Gaps at seams leak. Fix: Overlap ≥12" and wrap around a shared stake.

FAQs

Is silt fabric reusable?

It’s typically treated as temporary; UV exposure and installation wear reduce performance, so reuse isn’t recommended.

How many stakes do I need?

Our kit includes eleven 36" oak stakes, suitable for typical runs at standard spacing. Add extra stakes for steeper slopes or soft soils.

What other BMPs should I use with silt fabric?

Pair with inlet protection, rock check dams, and stabilized construction entrances to control sediment and track-out comprehensively.

Summary: Why Choose Our Silt Fabric

  • Durable woven polypropylene that reliably traps sediment
  • Includes eleven 36" oak stakes for secure, quick install
  • Designed to protect streams & storm sewers and support BMP compliance
