The Dandy Sack is a drop inlet filter that provides high level storm grate filtration. These strong sacks are open-top silt bags made to hang below the storm grate. They are able to filter very thick sediment filled stormwater. The suspended solids are allowed to settle out of the slowed flow and are captured by the Dandy Sack prior to entering the inlet. This product is easy to install, and has internal straps to add extra support and security for installation and removal.

Dandy Sack is available in various sizes and is reusable for jobs needing silt bags for catch basins.

Installation and Maintenance Guidelines

Installation:

  • Remove the grate from catch basin.
  • If using optional oil absorbents, place absorbent pillow in pouch on bottom of the unit.
  • Stand the grate on end. Move the top lifting straps out of the way and place the grate into the Dandy Sack so that the grate is below the top straps and above the lower straps.
  • Holding the lifting straps, insert the grate into the inlet.

    • Maintenance:

    •  Remove all accumulated sediment and debris from vicinity of the unit after each storm event.
    • After storm event and at regular intervals, look into Dandy Sack. If containment area is more than 1/3 full of sediment, the unit must be emptied.
    • To empty unit, simply lift the unit using lifting straps and remove the grate. If using optional oil absorbents, replace absorbent pillow when near saturation.

Using An Inlet Filter Will Improve Sediment Control

The Types Of Inlet Filters

There are different types of surface filters to choose from when dealing with low, medium, or high current speeds of water from rainfall or flooding.

- The surface curb filter is used for larger-scale projects including basins.

- Another filter is an inlet tube used for stormwater protection. These tubes can be weighted or non-weighted.

- The weighted tubes do not have to be staked in the ground to keep them in place. They are normally placed on top of gravel, asphalt, or other hard surfaces and work really well in areas where construction traffic may be around an opening where water can enter.

- The non-weighted tubes are used in other environments such as grass or brush and are typically tied down with stakes.

- Erecting a barrier of porous fabric around an inlet will create a shield against sediment while still allowing water to flow through the drain.

- You can also choose a specific filter to capture certain industrial or commercial pollutants including hydrocarbons and metals where BMPs including pretreatment for certain contaminants before moving water flows directly into ground aquifers.
