The Benefits Of Using Manufactured Stone Siding

Manufactured stone siding is easy to install, and can be carried out by siding contractors or carpenters just using nails or screws. Panel design is a faster installation because it weighs less than standard stone. Applied stone does not require footings for support. A rainscreen is constructed into the panel to offer an exceptional air or moisture management system. A rainscreen is an exterior wall design where the siding stands off from moisture-resistant surfaces of air or water, allowing for drainage and evaporation.

Versetta For Quality, Performance, And Innovation

This product has been tested and approved by the exacting requirements of the building code standards and comes with a Class A fire rating. It has received the NAHB Green Approval and can withstand various elements including freezes, thaws, average wind conditions, and heat. The panels are created for quick and easy installments using mechanical fasteners.

Water Resistive Barrier WRB and Versetta Stone

Siding Diagram and Water Resistive Barrier

Is There A Weather-Resistant Barrier That Can Be Used with Versetta Stone?

Only use one layer of Grade D building paper or a different WRB material that will meet the requirements of ICC Acceptance Criteria #38 or ASTM E 2556/E2556M. The #15 felt offers a dark background and provides a good aesthetic look should the WRB become visible. Two layers of WRB will be required for the inside and outside corners. Take a look at the flashing details in the “resource” section of this site. You should always check your local building code before starting installation.

How Do You Prepare the Surface For Installation?

Mortarless stone veneer panels, like Versetta Stone, are intended for over wood framing. They should be spaced 16-inches on center and covered by a code-approved nailable sheathing. Westlake Royal Building Products require a minimum of 7/16-inch OSB or 1/2-inch plywood sheathing under the Versetta Stone. The wall framing should be designed to limit out-of-axis to the wall at a minimum of L/24. The building's corners should be sheathed to meet local building codes. Roofing and the interior wallboard should be in place before you start the installation. Installation above 30 feet must be approved by the designers.

Only use one layer of Grade D building paper or a different WRB material that will meet the requirements of ICC Acceptance Criteria #38 or ASTM E 2556/E2556M. The #15 felt, ASTM d226 Type 1, with its dark background will help to hide areas where the texture or installation will see the WRB. A code or specific climate may need 2 layers of WRB. Flashing materials must be available at all terminations, penetrations, and material transitions.

    Cutting Versetta Stone Siding

It's recommended that when cutting Versetta Stone Siding you use a circular saw, hand grinder, or a miter saw with a 10-inch diamond segmented blade and a good dust extraction/vacuum system. You should always wear a disposable filtering face respirator, safety glasses, and protective gloves when cutting. Also, wear a long sleeve shirt and long pants for added protection. Directly afterward, wash your face and hands with soap and warm water.

    For Storage & Handling

    • This product should be transported and stored in the original shipping package with the nailing flange up until you are ready to use it.
    • Remove cutting dust with clean water and a nylon bristle brush to avoid airborne particles.
    • Stubborn dirt should be removed using granulated general detergent.
    • Do Not use a pressure washer to clean

    General Installation Tips & Rules

    • Ensure that the panels are installed from the bottom up, lapping in a shingle fashion.
    • Make sure the tongue is seated completely in the groove.
    • Avoid aligning vertical joints. Stagger the panels from one row to another.
    • Universal corners will create a staggered look.

    Installing The Versetta Stone

The flat panels – Start at the bottom of the wall, place the first panel with the nailing flange up, and fit into the Starter Strip. Fasten each panel with 4 Versetta Stone Fasteners at the top nailing flange. A minimum of 2 fasteners must penetrate the framing for proper support. The fasteners on the end of each panel should be located within 3-inches of the end of the panel. Place the next panel into the Starter Strip and slide it over so the end tabs are nested into the end tabs with the edge of the first panel. Once nested, place the fasteners.

The standard flat panel side will have to be removed by chipping it off so the panel will fit snugly against the back side of the corner. You can tweak the corner appearance with some adjustments of both pieces until you get a great fit. Each Universal Corner will need a minimum of two Versetta Stone Fasteners when the length is 18-inches or less using at least one fastener into the framing.

    Installing Versetta Starter Strip

    Versetta Taupe Starter Strip

    The Starter Strip

Use a level or chalk line to make sure the marks for the starter strip are level. Install the starter strip with roofing nails or Versetta Fasteners every 8 to 10-inches at the starting point line.

It's a good idea to allow a 1/32-inch gap between the fastener head and strip. Allow clearance at the material butt joints, corners, and ends of walls to give the correct alignment of panels. Finally, overlap the WRB over the starter strip nail flange to finish the starter strip installation.

    Fastening

One of the benefits of Versetta, it can be attached using building fasteners such as construction screws or a nailing gun for easy mortarless installation.

Install four Versetta Stone Fasteners for each panel when the length of the panel section is over 18-inches. 2 of the 4 fasteners should be as deep into the framing if possible. The fasteners should be driven straight into the backing and even into the framing.

Please Note – pneumatic nails should be driven directly through the nail flange into the framing. It's a good idea to add one additional fastener if there is only a single framing location behind the panel. When positioning the fasteners, be sure to keep them within 3-inches of each end of the panel.

    Versetta Stone Fastening Screw

    Versetta Fastener Screw

    Installing The Versetta Stone

The flat panels – Start at the bottom of the wall, place the first panel with the nailing flange up, and fit into the Starter Strip. Fasten each panel with 4 Versetta Stone Fasteners at the top nailing flange. A minimum of 2 fasteners must penetrate the framing for proper support. The fasteners on the end of each panel should be located within 3-inches of the end of the panel. Place the next panel into the Starter Strip and slide it over so the end tabs are nested into the end tabs with the edge of the first panel. Once nested, place the fasteners.

    Outside Corner Installation Instructions

You must start the installation of corner panels at the bottom of the wall and place one-half of a Universal Corner with the nail flange up. Make sure the cut edge is facing away from the corner into the starter strip channel. Place the standard Flat Panel into the Starter Strip on the adjoining wall. Slide the Universal Corner to go past the wall's edge and slide the flat panel to intersect with the Universal corner.

Versetta Stone Mission Point partial panel

    Partially Cut Versetta Panel Installation

How To Install Partial Panels and Accessories

During the project, panels will have to be cut and modified to fit and the flanges will have to be removed. Panels that do not have nail flanges must be fastened using an adhesive. Because adhesives cannot bond well to water-resistive barriers, use a good substance like a non-painted, clean metal flashing or augmented metal lath every 16-inches to the framing using nails. Note, that a lath is a thin narrow strip of wood nailed to the framing.

Apply a quarter-sized dab of adhesive at a minimum of 1/2-inches tall every 3 to 4 inches to the wall, the back of the partial panel. Adhesive applications also apply to accessories. Once you have the adhesive ready, firmly press the panel to the wall to make sure there is contact.

    PRO TIP

If you need to, insert a wedge, or wood shim, between the partial panel and trim to hold the panels in place while setting. Add a fastener to the partially cut panels every 16 inches by drilling a hole with a masonry drill bit as recommended by the manufacturer.

After the hole is drilled, you have to tighten just enough to bring the panel into the adhesive for contact while setting. You can easily hide the screw head by placing a small amount of Versetta Stone Textured Finishing Adhesive and then followed with a dusting of stone dust from the cuts to conceal the cut hole.

    Wainscot Cap Installation

Install Versetta Stone Wainscot Cap the same way as flat panels with 4 fasteners per panel with a minimum of 2 in framing. If you prefer, you can use adhesive as laid out in the instructions for installing partial panels.

Installing Wainscot Cap under an existing window or opening, remove the nailing flange where needed with a grinding wheel or metal snips. Use gloves and safety glasses and watch out for sharp edges. Install the Wainscot Cap the same way as for partial panels. There could be reasons for using “L” brackets to provide additional support. To have a proper fit of the bracket, a portion of the backside tongue will have to be removed with a hand grinder where the bracket makes contact. Mount two brackets for each Wainscot Cap to ensure a 1-inch penetration is in the framing.
