This root guard basket is made of knitted stainless steel mesh and is a fast and efficient for planting, and provides multi-year protection. Heavy-Duty Gopher Baskets For Protecting Your Plants

It's been 30 years since our original design hit the market. The heavy-duty gopher baskets have been protecting plants from pesky gophers at an affordable cost. We offer five sizes of Heavy-Duty Baskets to meet your specific planting needs from the one-quart mini basket up to the 15-gallon size.

The one-quart mini basket is vinyl-coated for durability and very easy to form while being gentle on your hands. It's specifically designed to protect the roots of small plants including annuals, herbs, and water plants. The one, three, and five-gallon baskets are made from 20-gauge, three-quarter-inch hex mesh wire that is hot-dip galvanized after weaving to last a long time and is resistant to corrosion. Hot-dip galvanized is the process of coating fabricated steel immersed in a bath of molten zinc.

Our Heavy-Duty Baskets

The one-gallon basket is perfect for perennial shrubs, bushes, and vines. Whether you need the one, three, or five-gallon basket, you will get excellent protection for your plants from gophers for up to ten years.

Our 15-gallon basket is made of twenty-gauge three-quarter-inch hex mesh with wire strands that are hot-dip galvanized before the weaving process. The weaving process also creates cracks in the coating in order for the basket to break down in three to five years which is a good amount of time for trees to become established and mature while resisting damage caused by gophers.

To start off, choose the Heavy-Duty Root Guard Gopher Wire Basket that is the best match for your plants. If you do not know which size is best for you, ask your professionals at your local garden center for help.

Collect all the tools you will need including a trowel or shovel, depending on the size of the hole you need, a stick or another tool to tamp down the soil, and a pair of garden gloves.

Our Heavy Duty Root Guard Gopher Wire Baskets are very easy to form in just a few steps:

  • Pull open the top of the basket to form a cylinder then bend over the side seams to support the bottom of the basket. Flatten out the bottom and then finish rounding out the basket form.
  • You are now ready to dig the hole and place the plant in it. You should dig the hole just wide enough in diameter to adapt to the basket and deep enough while providing a few inches of the wire basket above ground. Add enough soil to the bottom of the basket to support your plant. Center the plant root ball in the basket and fill the soil around the plant.
  • Make sure you fill any empty spaces. Tamp the soil down gently to remove all air pockets. You might want to use a stick to pack down the soil around the basket.
