Erosion Control Silt Fence: A Practical Guide for Contractors & Site Managers

How to choose, install, and maintain a silt fence—and stay compliant with stormwater regulations.

What Is a Silt Fence? (Quick Definition)

Technical: A silt fence is a temporary sediment control barrier made from woven polypropylene fabric attached to stakes, installed along the downslope perimeter of disturbed soil.

In plain English: It’s a strong fabric wall that catches muddy runoff so dirt stays on-site and out of lakes, streams, and storm drains.

Why Our Erosion Control Silt Fence?

  • High-efficiency sediment blocking: Crafted from woven polypropylene yarns to keep soil from washing off your jobsite.
  • Regulatory alignment: Helps meet common BMP (Best Management Practice) requirements for stormwater compliance.
  • Durable support: Includes eleven 36" oak stakes for reliable anchoring and quick installation.
  • Use cases: Protects lakes, wetlands, and storm sewers from construction runoff.

Where Silt Fence Works Best

  • Downslope perimeters of graded areas and stockpiles
  • Along property lines bordering sensitive water bodies
  • Entrance/exit corridors where sheet flow collects
  • Short-term controls during clearing, grubbing, and utility trenching

How to Install Silt Fence (Step-by-Step)

  1. Plan the line: Mark a continuous path along the contour (not straight upslope to downslope) so water spreads out rather than concentrating.
  2. Trench: Excavate a 6" deep x 6" wide trench on the upslope side of the line.
  3. Place fabric: Unroll the woven polypropylene fabric so 6" sits in the trench; keep fabric taut between stakes.
  4. Stake: Drive the 36" oak stakes on the downslope side, spacing typically 6–8 ft apart or tighter in steep sections.
  5. Backfill & compact: Backfill the trench over the fabric toe and compact to prevent undermining.
  6. Overlap correctly: Where rolls meet, overlap at least 12" and wrap around a shared stake to stop gaps.
  7. Create J-hooks (optional): At long runs or slope transitions, curve the fence upslope at the ends to contain flow.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t install across channels with concentrated flow—use check dams or inlet protection there.
  • Keep the fence upright and drum-tight; sagging fabric fails early.
  • Stage extra stakes at low points where hydrostatic pressure is highest.

Maintenance & Removal

  • Inspect after every rain: Repair tears, re-drive loose stakes, and re-compact any scoured toes.
  • Clean out sediment: When accumulation reaches ~⅓ the fabric height, shovel and spread it back on-site.
  • Remove at stabilization: After vegetation establishes or paving is complete, pull stakes and dispose of fabric per local requirements.

Sizing & Selection Cheat Sheet

  • Fabric type: Woven polypropylene for strength and dependable sediment retention.
  • Stake count: Our set includes eleven 36" oak stakes for a robust install footprint.
  • Stake spacing: 6–8 ft standard; reduce spacing on steeper slopes or soft soils.
  • Height: Typical 24–36" fabric; choose taller profiles for steeper grades and heavier loads.
  • Add-ons: Consider inlet protection, check dams, or track-out pads to complement perimeter control.
